Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica: Super all-rounder

Lamborghini unveiled the newest addition to its Huracán range, the Huracán Tecnica, at the New York International Auto Show in New York City last week. Featuring rear-wheel drive with four-wheel steering and lots of other goodies, the 631-hp mid-engine supercar combines the driving performance of the Huracán STO, the comfort and everyday usability of the Huracán EVO, and the thrilling drive performance of the Huracán EVO RWD to provide a powerful-yet-nimble super machine for road and track.

In the Huracán line, Tecnica sits between the EVO RWD and the track-focused STO. The lightweight Tecnica's distinctly tuned driving modes with specific suspension setup, rear-wheel direct steering, and innovative brake cooling improvements allow the driver to experience the perfect Huracán for every occasion. Central to all of this is the recalibrated LDVI (Lamborghini Dynamic Vehicle Integration) system, which is the brains of the car that coordinates the all-wheel-drive system, the all-wheel steering system, torque vectoring, and advanced traction control.

The rear-wheel-drive Tecnica incorporates rear-wheel steering with direct steering ratio and torque vectoring, together with a modified Performance Traction Control System (P-TCS) and specific suspension setup. Depending on the drive mode selected (STRADA, SPORT, or CORSA), every dynamic system is calibrated to provide a highly differentiated response to each environment.

Tecnica gets its V10 engine from the Huracán STO. It boasts an increase of 30 hp over the Huracán EVO rear-wheel drive (RWD), delivers 565 Nm of torque at max 6,500 rpm, and provides improved acceleration of 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 sec. It has a top speed of 202 mph and sports a 7-speed LDF dual-clutch transmission.

A lot of Lamborghini engineering has gone into the car's new brake cooling management, which was inspired by track-based Lamborghini experience and delivers consistently better braking performance on both road and track. The Tecnica's carbon ceramic brakes adopt specifically designed cooling deflectors and caliper ducts, directing the airflow into the discs to maximize heat dissipation and reduce brake fluid temperatures and brake pedal elongation. Lamborghini says the reduction in disc temperatures also cuts brake pad consumption.

Huracán Tecnica also boasts a significant and sophisticated overall design revision for the line. It has a hybrid chassis made from aluminum and carbon fiber. The outer skin is made from aluminum and composite material. It has a double wishbone, fully independent suspension and MagneRide electromagnetic damper control. Tecnica is almost 2.5 in. longer than the EVO but retains the same height and width. Even though this seems like a small change, the car has a noticeably lower and broader, predatory stance.

The car features a powerful, inward-facing front with muscular shoulders that meet a lightweight, fully carbon fiber hood. A new bumper incorporates an air curtain for the first time in a Huracán. A new front splitter with lower, open slats directs air through the wheels and contributes to improved downforce and cooling. The rear has been revised too to include a new vertical rear glass window that gives improved visibility, a redesigned engine hood in lightweight carbon fiber that celebrates the V10 heart of the Tecnica, a new bumper with optimized air inlet, diffuser painted in body color or optional black, and new hexagonal exhaust pipes that, combined with a revised exhaust system, deliver an enhanced engine sound.

The fixed rear wing completes the unique lines of the Tecnica. Lamborghini says the wing's aero design contributes to the 35% improvement in rear downforce compared to the Huracán EVO RWD as well as an impressive 20% reduction in drag. Tecnica's underbody is also optimized with new aero deflectors for improved aerodynamic efficiency.

The new Damiso 20-in. diamond cut wheels get their inspiration from the Lamborghini Vision GT. They sport a hexagonal design and are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires.

Inside, the height-adjustable sports seats immerse the driver in the cockpit. The interior seems more comfortable overall, like the engineers have worked to make the everyday-driving aspect particularly important. Further options include a lightweight door design, a rear arch and wheel bolts in lightweight titanium, and harness seat belts for those heading to the circuit.

A redesigned, sophisticated HMI interface is exclusive to the Tecnica. The driver's instrument panel reduces colors and emphasizes readability in a large new "arc" in front of the driver. The central console screen puts the fun-to-drive elements at the disposal of the cockpit's occupants, including the LDVI functions in real-time display, as well as all connectivity functions including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Inspired by the STO, the HMI includes connected telemetry and on-board diaries of destinations and track times, connected to the UNICA app.

Together with eight standard exterior colors, more than 200 additional paint options are available through Lamborghini's Ad Personam program. New interior trim in Alcantara is available specifically for Tecnica, as are new stitching designs.

Lamborghini did not release pricing at the New York unveiling, but MotorTrend says the Huracán Tecnica starts at $239,000.
